What Has a Head and a Tail but No Body? Classic Riddle Answer

This classic riddle asks: What has a head and a tail but no body?

The answer is: a coin.

Many coins have a “heads” side featuring a portrait or emblem, and a “tails” side on the opposite face. But a coin obviously has no body between them.

The riddle works because the words “head” and “tail” make you picture an animal or person. Instead, they refer to the two familiar sides of a coin.

Once you stop thinking about a living creature and focus on everyday objects, the answer becomes much easier to spot. It is one of the best-known examples of a short riddle built around double meanings.
