This sunset marsh is filled with cranes, but not all of them stand out immediately. Some are flying, some are standing in shallow water, and others are partly hidden among reeds and grasses.
The easiest way to count them is to work from the top of the picture down, separating the flying birds from those standing on the ground or in the water.

The smaller cranes in the background and the birds partly concealed by vegetation are easy to miss. If you counted fewer than 17, take another look around the edges and the distant wetland.
