Is the Cat Going Up or Down? This Viral Optical Illusion Divides the Internet

At first glance, this looks like a simple photo of a cat on a staircase.

But within seconds, it turns into a debate.

👉 Is the cat going up… or down?

This viral illusion works because the image removes key depth cues your brain normally relies on—like shadows, clear step edges, and perspective anchors. Without those clues, your brain is forced to guess the direction based on subtle details.

Some people immediately see the cat walking upstairs.

Others are convinced it’s coming down toward them.

So what’s actually happening?

👉 The answer lies in the orientation of the steps.

If you look closely, the visible edges suggest the steps are facing upward toward the cat—meaning the cat is most likely walking down the stairs.

But here’s the twist:

Even after knowing that, many people still can’t “unsee” the opposite direction.

That’s because your brain locks onto the first interpretation it makes—and then sticks to it.

This illusion perfectly shows how perception isn’t always reality.

Sometimes, what you see says more about your brain… than the image itself.
