For months, she had been asking the same question every single day.
“Is the baby here yet?”
Her parents would smile and gently say, “Not yet.”
But she didn’t understand time the way adults do.
To her, waiting felt endless.
She talked to her mom’s belly like it was already a person.
She would sit next to her, place her tiny hand gently on it, and whisper things no one else could hear.
“I’m your big sister,” she’d say proudly.
“I’ll protect you.”
Sometimes she’d bring her toys and place them carefully nearby, as if the baby could already choose which one it liked.
The day finally came.
Her parents rushed to the hospital, and for the first time in her life, she had to spend a night away from them.
She didn’t like that.
She kept asking when she could see the baby.
The next morning, they brought her in.
She walked slowly into the hospital room, a little nervous, a little curious…
And then she saw her mom.
And in her arms…
The baby.
She froze.
For a second, she didn’t move at all.
It was like everything she had imagined suddenly became real at once.
Then her face lit up.
“Is that her?” she whispered.
Her mom nodded, smiling.
“Do you want to hold her?”
She didn’t answer.
She just nodded quickly.
They gently placed the tiny, wrapped baby into her arms.
And suddenly…
She went very quiet.
No excitement.
No jumping.
Just silence.
Everyone in the room watched.
She looked down at her baby sister like she was the most important thing in the world.
And then…
She leaned in closer and whispered something so soft, they almost missed it.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
Her mom instantly started tearing up.
Even the nurse turned away for a second.
Because in that one sentence…
There was love.
There was patience.
There was a bond that had already been growing long before this moment.
She gently adjusted the blanket, like she already knew what she was doing.
“Don’t worry,” she added quietly,
“I’m here now.”
And just like that…
She wasn’t just a little girl anymore.
She became a big sister.
