For weeks my Golden Retriever, Buddy, had been obsessed with one particular shoe — an old, worn-out sneaker that belonged to my dad.
Every morning and every evening he would gently pick it up and bring it straight to me. I’d laugh, tell him “no,” and put it back in the closet. But without fail, he would find it again and drop it at my feet, looking up at me with those big hopeful eyes.
I started getting a little frustrated. Why this one shoe? It wasn’t even his toy.
Then one quiet evening, after he brought it to me for the hundredth time, I finally sat on the floor with him. I turned the shoe over in my hands and noticed how faded and stretched it was — clearly worn from years of use.
That’s when it hit me.
My dad had passed away six months earlier. This was his favorite everyday shoe. He used to wear it when he took Buddy for walks around the neighborhood. The two of them would go out every single evening, just the two of them.
Buddy wasn’t being naughty. He was trying to tell me something.
He missed his favorite walking buddy. He was bringing me the shoe because it still carried Dad’s scent… and he wanted us to go for that walk again.
I hugged Buddy tight and cried into his soft fur. The next evening I put on my coat, picked up the old shoe, and said, “Okay buddy… let’s go for a walk.”
Buddy’s tail wagged so hard I thought it might fall off. We walked the same route my dad used to take him on.
Now every evening we still do that walk together. I carry Dad’s old shoe in my hand, and Buddy walks proudly beside me.
Dogs don’t forget the people they love. And sometimes they find the sweetest ways to remind us to keep their memory alive. ❤️
