For weeks my dog Cooper had been sneaking into the backyard after dark and digging like crazy in the far corner near the fence.
I would yell at him to stop, fill the hole back in, and bring him inside. But the next night he would be right back at it, dirt flying everywhere.
I started to worry he was sick or stressed. Nothing seemed to calm him down.
One rainy Thursday night, his digging got louder than ever. I grabbed my flashlight and went out to see what was going on.
Cooper was covered in mud, panting hard, but he didn’t stop. His paws were working furiously as he pulled something out of the ground.
I shined the light into the hole… and my heart nearly stopped.
There, carefully wrapped in an old plastic bag, was a small metal box. Cooper had dug it up and was gently nudging it toward me with his nose.
With shaking hands I opened the box. Inside were old handwritten letters, a faded photo of a young couple, and a small gold locket.
Later I learned the previous owners of the house had buried it there over 40 years ago. The letters were love notes between a husband and wife who had lived here when they were newlyweds. The wife had hidden the box before she passed away, hoping one day someone would find their story.
Cooper didn’t just find an old box… he uncovered a beautiful, long-forgotten love story buried in our backyard.
That night I sat on the porch with Cooper, reading those old letters through tears while he lay proudly beside me, covered in dirt.
Sometimes our dogs know things we don’t. Cooper kept digging until he made sure their love story wasn’t lost forever. ❤️
