This old wooden board with a ribbed metal surface looks mysterious to many people today. It’s actually a classic washboard (also called a laundry board).
Before washing machines existed, people used these to hand-wash clothes. You’d rub wet soapy clothes up and down the corrugated metal to scrub out dirt. They were a household essential for generations.
Now they’re mostly sold as decorative pieces or for making music (some people still play them as instruments). Finding one brings back memories for older generations of doing laundry the hard way.
