A person discovered this long, pointed, heavily rusted metal object lying on the side of a rural road. It has a sharp tip and a distinctive ribbed/segmented middle section.
The answer: This is a spent .50 caliber BMG bullet casing (or similar large machine gun / anti-material rifle shell).
These massive cartridges are used in heavy machine guns and sniper rifles. After being fired, the brass casing is ejected and left behind. Over time, it rusts and weathers when exposed to the elements. The ribs help with heat dissipation during firing.
Finding old military casings is fairly common in rural areas near former training grounds or hunting spots.
