Many dog owners notice their pet letting out a long sigh just after lying down, and it’s usually a completely normal behavior. Animal behavior experts explain that a sigh often signals relaxation after a period of activity or excitement. Once dogs find a comfortable spot, they release tension with a deep breath, much like people do after a long day. If a dog’s body is relaxed and its eyes are soft or closing, the sigh is generally a sign of comfort and contentment. However, frequent sighing accompanied by lethargy, coughing, or difficulty breathing should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Most of the time, though, it’s simply your dog settling in for a peaceful rest.
