When dogs kick their legs while being scratched, it is usually caused by a natural reflex. This is called the scratch reflex, and it happens when nerves under the skin are stimulated.
The dog’s body reacts automatically by moving the back leg, almost as if trying to scratch the spot itself. It is most common around the belly, sides, and chest. While it may look funny, it is usually harmless. If your dog seems uncomfortable or irritated, stop and check the skin.
