This old farm tool is a hand-crank corn sheller, also called a maize sheller.
Farmers placed dried ears of corn into the hopper and turned the large side crank. The rotating metal mechanism stripped the kernels from the cob, allowing them to fall through the openings into a container below. The empty cob was released separately.
Corn shellers saved considerable time compared with removing every kernel by hand. The collected corn could then be used for animal feed, cooking, planting, or storage.
