Traffic came to a complete standstill on the busy highway when drivers noticed a dog lying right in the middle of the lane.

People honked their horns and some got out of their cars shouting, but the dog wouldn’t budge. He stayed flat on his belly with his head down, refusing to move no matter how loud it got.

A small crowd gathered on the shoulder. Someone called animal control. Everyone was confused and frustrated.

Then a young woman knelt down and crawled closer to see what was wrong.

She gasped and shouted, “Everyone stop! There’s a puppy under him!”

Lying safely between the dog’s front legs and belly was a tiny newborn puppy — barely a few days old. The mother dog had been hit by a car earlier and was badly injured, but instead of running to safety, she dragged herself into the road to shield her only surviving pup from the oncoming traffic.

She refused to move because she was using her own body as a living shield to protect her baby.

The crowd went completely silent. Many people started crying when they realized the sacrifice this mother was making.

With gentle help from bystanders and animal control, both the mother and her puppy were safely moved off the road. The mother was rushed to the vet with serious injuries, but thanks to her bravery, her puppy was completely unharmed.

The mother is now recovering and both have been taken in by a rescue group that promised to keep them together.
