He pointed to an old abandoned barn at the back of the property that hadn’t been touched in 25 years. “Fix it up by sunset,” he said. “If you can do that, you have my blessing.”
I worked like a man possessed — from sunrise until the sky turned golden. My hands were bleeding, my back was killing me, but I didn’t stop. I patched the roof, cleared decades of dirt and junk, hung new lights, and even picked wildflowers to place around the entrance.
When the sun finally set, her entire family walked out to see it. Her father stood completely silent, staring at the transformed barn with tears in his eyes.
“That barn is where my wife and I got married 22 years ago,” he said, his voice cracking. “I told you if you could bring it back to life, you could have my daughter’s hand. You didn’t just fix a building, son… you proved you’ll fight for her every single day of your life.”
He placed her hand in mine as the whole family cheered and cried.
That night, under the string lights in the restored barn, I got down on one knee. She said yes through happy tears.
