In 2002, in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve, a lioness named Kamunyak did something extraordinary — she adopted a baby oryx (a type of antelope) and cared for it as if it were her own cub. For several weeks, she protected the young antelope from danger, even though lions normally hunt oryx for food.
