Many dog owners wonder why their dog stares at them intensely, sometimes for long periods. While it can feel a bit intense, this behavior is usually a sign of deep connection and communication.
Dogs stare at their humans because they are highly social animals that have evolved to read our facial expressions, body language, and emotions. When your dog stares at you, they are often trying to understand what you want, how you’re feeling, or simply enjoying being close to you. In many cases, it’s also a request for attention, food, or a walk.
Most importantly, long, soft eye contact with your dog releases oxytocin (the “love hormone”) in both of you — the same hormone released between mothers and babies. So when your dog stares at you, they’re often just saying “I love you.”
