Unlike dogs, cats don’t have the same concept of “ownership.” According to animal behavior experts, cats often see their humans as larger, non-threatening cats or as parental figures (especially if they were hand-raised or socialized with humans from a young age).
They treat us as part of their social group, seeking comfort, security, and companionship from us. This explains why they bring “gifts,” rub against us to mark territory, and show affection in their own unique ways.
Understanding this perspective helps us appreciate the special, equal bond we share with our cats.
