One of the most common dog behaviours that puzzled owners and vets for a long time is circling before lying down. While it looks like a simple habit, it actually comes from their wild ancestors.
In the wild, dogs would circle to trample down grass, leaves, or snow to create a comfortable, flat sleeping spot and to check for hidden dangers like snakes or insects. Even though our modern dogs don’t need to do this, the instinct remains strong.
Understanding these natural behaviours helps us appreciate our dogs even more.
