The gray sea was deceptively calm, just another routine morning on the water. Aboard the small, blue fishing boat, a fisherman in a bright yellow slicker stood near the stern, lulled by the rhythmic rocking of the waves.
Without warning, the ocean erupted.
A shadow darker than the depths swelled beneath the surface, followed by a violent explosion of white water. A colossal humpback whale breached, launching its massive body into the overcast sky. For a terrifying, suspended second, the leviathan hung in the air directly above the stern, its sheer size entirely dwarfing the tiny vessel.
Then, gravity took hold.
The whale crashed down with the crushing force of a falling building. The impact was deafening. The hull groaned in protest as the boat pitched violently to starboard, threatening to capsize. The fisherman was thrown off balance as an immediate onslaught of freezing seawater swamped the deck.
Panic shattered the morning air. “Oh my god!” a desperate voice screamed over the roaring water. “Get to the bow! Grab the ring! Jump if you have to, go, go!” As the crippled boat struggled against the surge, the fisherman scrambled forward, left with a chilling, unforgettable reminder of who truly rules the deep.
