A Man Has 6 Eggs, Breaks 2, Cooks 2 and Eats 2 — How Many Are Left?

This classic egg riddle sounds like several different eggs are being used, but the wording is the trick.

A man has 6 eggs. He breaks 2, cooks 2, and eats 2. How many eggs are left?

The same two eggs can be the ones that are broken, then cooked, then eaten. There is no reason to assume he uses a different pair for each action. So only two eggs are actually used.

Starting with 6 eggs and using 2 leaves:

6 – 2 = 4

Answer: 4 eggs are left.

This is a good example of why reading carefully matters more than doing complicated arithmetic. The verbs make it feel like six eggs are gone, but the actions can all apply to the same two eggs.
