30 ÷ 5 × 2: The Answer Is Not 20 — What Is It?

This equation looks simple, but it catches people who do multiplication before division just because of the familiar order-of-operations acronym.

The expression is 30 ÷ 5 × 2. Division and multiplication have the same priority, so they are performed from left to right.

30 ÷ 5 = 6. Then 6 × 2 = 12.

Answer: 12.

The common mistake is multiplying 5 × 2 first to get 10 and then dividing 30 by 10. But without parentheses, that is not the correct order.
