At first, this chocolate chip cookie picture looks easy. You can see nine large cookies arranged in three rows. But the headline gives away the trick: there are more than nine cookies here.
The cookie counting challenge
Our careful count is 13 cookies. The nine large cookies are only the starting point. Additional cookies peek out from behind the big ones near the upper-left corner, between the top cookies, around the lower-left edge, and beside the cookie at the bottom right.
The smaller cookies don’t occupy full spaces of their own, so it is tempting to ignore them. Check for separate chocolate chip patterns and rounded edges to tell one pastry from another.
Why we miss objects in crowded pictures
When objects are arranged in a clean three-by-three grid, the mind quickly recognizes the pattern and may stop searching. Partially hidden objects disrupt that pattern, but only if you look closely enough to notice them.
For a more reliable count, examine each row separately and then search the spaces between rows. Mark the objects mentally as you go so you don’t accidentally count the same small cookie twice.
