At first glance, this colorful butterfly picture seems to show nine butterflies in a three-by-three grid. But the headline warns that most people miss three more.
How many butterflies are in the picture?
The intended answer is 12 butterflies. Nine large butterflies are arranged in the main pattern, while three smaller butterflies are partly hidden behind the wings of larger ones.
Where are the hidden butterflies?
Start with the top-left orange butterfly, where a smaller blue butterfly peeks out. Then inspect the middle of the picture near the red butterfly; another smaller butterfly is partly visible to its right. Finally, check behind the bottom-right purple-and-blue butterfly for another little yellow winged butterfly.
The trick is that bright colors and matching shapes make your brain focus on the large grid. The extras are smaller and partially overlap with other butterflies, so they can disappear into the design at a glance.
