These adorable yellow baby chicks look easy to count at first. The image headline says “Most people count 9. How many baby chicks are really here?” Look a little closer and you’ll find that some are hiding among the larger birds.
Look for the small chicks
First count the most prominent chicks across the top, middle and bottom of the image. Then check the gaps beneath their wings and between neighboring bodies. A few tiny chicks have only their small faces showing, which makes them easy to miss.
How many are in the picture?
The intended count is 12 baby chicks: nine large obvious chicks and three smaller hidden ones. Search carefully near the left side of the upper group, in the gap between the upper birds, and near the bottom center to find the little faces.
A better counting method
Don’t rely on full bodies. Count each distinct head and beak, working from top to bottom so you avoid double-counting. It’s surprising how quickly the eyes overlook a tiny face tucked into a group of similarly colored animals.
Did you find all twelve chicks before checking the answer? Try challenging a friend to count them without pointing at the screen.
