A Man Pushes His Car to a Hotel and Loses His Fortune — Why?

This classic riddle says: A man pushes his car to a hotel and loses his fortune. Why? At first, it sounds like a real-life disaster involving a broken car, an expensive hotel, or a terrible financial decision.

The answer is: he is playing Monopoly.

In the board game Monopoly, players move small tokens around the board, and one of the traditional tokens is a car. A player can land on a property with a hotel owned by another player and be forced to pay a large amount of rent. If the rent is high enough, that payment can wipe out the player’s money and effectively cost them their fortune.

The trick is that the “car” and “hotel” are not part of a real journey. They are pieces and properties in a board game.
