Why Can’t Your Nose Be 12 Inches Long? The Classic Riddle Answer

Some of the best riddles are also the shortest. This one begins with a strange question: Why can’t your nose be 12 inches long?

It’s tempting to think about anatomy, measurements, or the largest nose in the world. But this riddle is not really asking for a scientific explanation.

The answer to the 12-inch nose riddle

Because then it would be a foot!

In the imperial system of measurement, 12 inches equal one foot. The joke works because the word foot also describes part of the human body. So a nose measuring exactly 12 inches would be a foot long in more ways than one.

Why this joke makes people smile

This is a classic example of a pun: a word carries two meanings, and the punchline switches between them. It is easy to understand once you’ve heard it, but the answer can be difficult to guess when you’re thinking too literally.

Try asking someone the question without giving any hints. The pause before the punchline is often the funniest part.
