Which Vintage Doorknob Is Different? Spot the Odd One Out

Old brass doorknobs have a charm that modern hardware often lacks. Their round handles, warm worn finish and little decorative flourishes evoke the doors of older houses, cozy hallways and family homes. In this picture, twelve vintage style knobs are arranged in a neat grid.

The challenge is to find the one knob that is not quite like the others. At a glance, the handles seem identical. Their general shape, brass color and background all match, which means your eyes need to move past those familiar features and focus on the decoration.

Take a closer look

Look first at the flower at the top of each round backplate. Compare the petal shapes and their arrangement around the center. Then inspect the screws and the base of each knob. Instead of jumping randomly around the picture, work across the top row from left to right and continue in the same pattern through the other two rows.

An efficient way to solve an odd one out puzzle is to pick one clear example as your reference and compare every later object to it. When you think you have found a difference, check two or three others to make sure it really is unique.

The answer

Look closely at the flower decoration on the knob in the second row, second column. That is the intended odd one out: its floral detail is drawn differently from the matching decorations. Small differences are easier to spot when you compare neighboring knobs side by side.
