What Has a Lot of Eyes but Cannot See? Classic Riddle Answer

What has a lot of eyes but cannot see a thing? It sounds like a strange creature, but the answer is something you might find in almost any kitchen.

Think about the word eyes

The riddle does not mean human or animal eyes. In everyday language, some objects have parts that are also called eyes. Once you think beyond eyesight, the clue becomes easier.

The answer: a potato

A potato has small buds or indentations commonly called eyes. These are the points from which new shoots can develop. Even though it can have many eyes, a potato cannot see.

Why the riddle works

The joke comes from two meanings of the same word. An eye can be an organ used for seeing, or it can describe a feature on a plant or object. Wordplay is what makes many traditional riddles memorable.

One more challenge

Before giving away the answer, ask a friend what else has an eye but cannot see. A needle, a storm and some other objects can all appear in similar classic riddles.
