There were two of them once, raised together, fed from the same hands, sleeping side by side, never separated, never treated differently, until something in the house started to change
The man had been distant, distracted, coming and going without the same energy, and while one dog still followed him closely, eager for attention, the other stayed back more often, watching, waiting, trying to understand something that didn’t make sense
That morning, it became clear
The leash only came out once
Not twice
He called one dog
And the other stayed
Chained

Watching
The distance grew with every step, until the sound of footsteps faded, until the space in front of him felt empty in a way it never had before

Different people

But he didn’t resist

They unhooked the chain
