For over two years, I saw him every morning on my way to work.
His name was Thomas. He was a quiet, kind-looking man in his late 60s who slept in the alley behind the old bakery. Every day I would stop and hand him a warm meal — sometimes a sandwich, fruit, coffee, whatever I could afford.
He never asked for money. He never complained. He would just look at me with those tired but grateful eyes and say, “God bless you, Maria.”
I never told anyone about him. It was my little secret act of kindness.
Then one cold Tuesday morning, he wasn’t there.
A week passed. Then another. I started to worry. I asked around the neighborhood, and that’s when I found out… Thomas had passed away peacefully in his sleep just a few days earlier.
My heart broke. I wished I had done more. I wished I had asked his story.
Yesterday afternoon, there was a soft knock at my door. A young woman stood there holding a worn envelope. She told me Thomas had asked her to deliver it if anything ever happened to him.
With shaking hands I opened it.
Inside was a small, folded piece of paper and something wrapped in tissue.
The note read:
“Dear Maria,
You were the only person who saw me as a human being. Every meal you brought me gave me strength, but more than that… you gave me hope. I had nothing to give you back… until now.
My mother gave me this when I was a boy. It’s the only thing of value I’ve ever owned. Please take it. You deserve it more than anyone.
Thank you for feeding my body… and my soul.

Tears were already falling as I unwrapped the tissue.
Inside was a beautiful gold pocket watch. On the back was engraved: “To my son, Thomas — May time always be kind to you. Love, Mom. 1968”
It was clearly very old and valuable. But the real treasure was the note.
This man who had nothing… chose to give me his most precious possession.
I sat on the floor and cried for a long time. Not out of sadness, but because of the incredible kindness that exists even in the hardest places.
Thomas taught me that even when we think we have nothing to give… we can still change someone’s life with love.
I now carry that watch with me every day as a reminder.
