What Kind of Snake Is This? Common Backyard Snake Identification

A homeowner shared this photo of a snake they found slithering in their grass. The snake has a dark body with distinctive yellow/cream stripes running down its length and a relatively slender build.

This is a Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis).

They are one of the most widespread snakes in North America. Garter snakes are completely harmless to humans — they’re non-venomous, shy, and usually try to escape rather than bite. They’re great for gardens because they eat slugs, insects, and small rodents.

If you see one, there’s no need to panic. Just give it space and it will usually move on.
