In 1999, a fisherman walking along an English beach spotted a weathered glass bottle half-buried in the sand. Inside was a faded but preserved love letter written during the First World War.
The letter read something like:
“My dearest love,
As I sit here in the trenches, my thoughts are only of you and our future together. The days are long and hard, but knowing you wait for me keeps me going. Kiss our little one for me every night. I promise I will come home to you.
Forever yours,
Your loving husband”
Miraculously, the fisherman was able to trace the letter back to the soldier’s daughter in New Zealand — who was still alive at the time. Receiving her father’s words decades after he wrote them was an incredibly emotional moment for her.
This beautiful story shows how a simple message of love can survive wars, oceans, and nearly a century to finally reach its destination.
