When the smoke finally cleared, the only sounds left were sirens fading in the distance and a little girl crying softly on the lawn.
The fire had spread quickly through the old wooden house. Firefighters rushed inside, searching room by room to make sure no one was left behind. Minutes felt like hours.
Then one firefighter emerged from the smoke, holding something small in his gloved hands.
A kitten.
