If you’ve ever watched a horse after a ride or training session, you may have noticed something surprising—it lets out a big yawn. While many people assume the horse is simply tired, yawning after exercise can happen for several different reasons.
One common explanation is relaxation. After physical activity, horses often transition from a state of alertness to one of rest. As their heart rate and breathing begin to return to normal, some horses yawn as part of that relaxation process.
Yawning may also occur when a horse is releasing tension in the jaw, neck, and facial muscles. During riding, horses carry a bit, respond to rein pressure, and engage muscles throughout their body. Once the work is over, yawning can help loosen those muscles.
