When a dog places a paw on your arm, it is usually trying to communicate. The gesture may mean your dog wants attention, affection, reassurance, or simply to stay connected with you.
Some dogs learn that offering a paw brings petting or a response, so they repeat the behavior. Others use it when they feel uncertain and want comfort from someone they trust.
Body language provides the best clue. A relaxed face and wagging tail usually signal affection, while tense posture or repeated pawing may indicate anxiety or an unmet need.
