The cold had settled in early that year, sharp, biting, the kind that doesn’t just chill the air but seeps into everything, wood, ground, skin, making even the quietest morning feel harsh, and most people stayed inside, warm, unaware of what was happening just outside their doors
She wasn’t supposed to be out that long
Just a few steps from the house, boots crunching in the snow, breath visible with every small exhale, but something made her stop, something that didn’t feel right, something too still for a place that should have been empty
