It was a brutally cold winter evening when we spotted him.
A medium-sized dog was chained tightly to a rusty pipe on the side of an old abandoned building. Snow was falling heavily, and he was shivering uncontrollably. His fur was matted and dirty, and his metal bowl was frozen solid with only a tiny bit of dirty water left.
We approached slowly, expecting him to be aggressive from all the neglect. Instead, he just looked up at us with the saddest, most defeated eyes we had ever seen. He didn’t bark. He didn’t growl. He just wagged his tail weakly, as if he was still hoping for kindness.
We thought the heavy chain and the freezing conditions were the worst of it… but then we saw the real tragedy.
Around his neck was an old, faded collar with a tag that read “Buddy – If found, please call my family.” The phone number was from three years earlier.
This poor dog hadn’t been forgotten for a few days or even weeks… he had been chained up and abandoned for years.
We immediately called for help. With bolt cutters we freed him from the heavy chain. He was so weak he could barely walk, but he still tried to lick our hands in gratitude.
Buddy is now safe, warm, and receiving medical care. He has a long road to recovery, but he’s finally surrounded by people who love him.
This story is a painful reminder that some animals suffer in silence for far too long. No dog deserves to be chained and forgotten like this.
