For the past year, 6-year-old Ethan and his golden retriever puppy, Sunny, had the sweetest morning routine.
Every school day, Ethan would grab his backpack and head to the bus stop with Sunny right by his side. They would sit together on the green bench, surrounded by falling autumn leaves. Ethan would talk about his day ahead while Sunny listened with his tongue hanging out and tail wagging.
The bus driver and other kids loved seeing them together. Sunny had become the unofficial mascot of the bus stop.
But last week, everything changed.
Sunny suddenly stopped coming to the bench. Ethan waited every morning, looking down the street with a sad face, but his best friend never showed up.
Ethan’s mom noticed how quiet her son had become. When she asked what was wrong, Ethan whispered, “Sunny doesn’t want to be my friend anymore.”
That afternoon, they went looking for Sunny. They found him at the neighbor’s house — he had been hit by a car a few days earlier and was recovering from a broken leg. The neighbor had taken him in to help.
When Sunny saw Ethan, his tail started wagging so hard it thumped against the floor. Ethan ran over and hugged him tight, tears in his eyes.
The neighbor explained that Sunny had tried to limp to the bus stop every morning, but his leg hurt too much. He had been waiting at the window, watching for Ethan.
Now Sunny is healing well and Ethan visits him every day after school. The two are back to their special morning routine — just a little slower while Sunny recovers.
This sweet friendship between a boy and his dog reminds us how pure and strong the bond can be. ❤️
