Many loving dog owners are surprised to learn that one of the things they do most often is actually stressful for their dog: hugging.
While humans see hugging as a sign of love and affection, most dogs find it uncomfortable and even threatening. Being wrapped in someone’s arms restricts their movement and can trigger a stress response. Some dogs tolerate it because they love their owners, but many show subtle signs of discomfort like lip licking, yawning, or trying to pull away.
Instead of hugging, try gentle petting, talking to them in a calm voice, or simply sitting close to them. These are often much more enjoyable ways for dogs to receive affection.
