Why Your Cat Shows You Its Belly Isn’t What You Think

Many cat owners assume that when their cat rolls over and shows its belly, it wants to be rubbed there. In reality, showing the belly is often a sign of trust — they feel safe enough with you to expose their most vulnerable area.

However, most cats do not actually enjoy belly rubs. The belly is a sensitive area with many nerve endings, and petting it can quickly become overstimulating or uncomfortable. They may roll over as a play invitation or a defensive posture rather than a request for touch.

Respecting this boundary helps strengthen your bond with your cat.
