A shelter dog repeatedly pushed his food bowl toward the kennel door and refused to eat.
At first, the staff worried that he was sick or frightened. They changed his food, checked his teeth, and watched him closely, but he continued moving the bowl away each time it was placed beside him.
Then one worker noticed that the dog kept looking toward the kennel across the hallway, where a nervous new arrival had barely touched her own food.
The staff moved his kennel closer and placed the bowls near the shared divider. Almost immediately, he settled down and began eating while the frightened dog watched beside him.
Within minutes, she started eating too.
The shelter team realized he had not been rejecting his food. He simply did not want to eat while another dog nearby was scared and alone.
From that day forward, the two dogs were kept beside each other, and both became calmer. Their unexpected friendship later helped them find a home together.
