My Stepson Asked Me Not to Attend His Wedding

I stared at the photograph Rachel had sent me for several minutes before calling her.

“Why am I looking at an empty chair?”

“Because,” she said, “Michael never wanted you excluded.”

Then she told me what had really happened.

Two months before the wedding, Michael’s biological mother, Denise, had suddenly contacted him after nearly twenty years of silence. She had heard about the wedding through relatives and wanted to attend.

Michael agreed, hoping they might finally repair some part of their relationship.

But Denise soon began making demands.

She told Michael she wouldn’t attend if I was there. According to Rachel, Denise said she couldn’t sit through a ceremony watching “another woman pretend to be his mother.”

Michael was furious, but also torn. He had spent most of his life wondering why Denise left, and part of him still wanted answers.

So he made the worst decision possible.

He asked me to stay home.

What Michael didn’t know was that Denise never showed up.

That empty chair in Rachel’s photograph had been reserved for her.

Michael apparently spent the entire morning checking the entrance, hoping she would walk through it.

She didn’t.

After the ceremony, Rachel finally told him what she had done—she had saved a seat for me too, just in case Michael changed his mind.

That was when Michael broke down.

An hour after Rachel called me, someone knocked on my door.

Michael was standing there in his wedding suit.

His tie was loose, his eyes were red, and the first thing he said was, “I chose someone who abandoned me over the woman who stayed.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Then he handed me the small white flower that had been pinned to his jacket.

“I should have had you there,” he whispered. “Can you ever forgive me?”

I hugged the boy I had helped raise and told him that loving someone doesn’t mean they never hurt you. Sometimes it means giving them the chance to understand exactly what they almost threw away.

A month later, Michael and Rachel held a small dinner in our backyard.

They wore their wedding clothes again.

Michael took my arm and asked me to walk beside him across the lawn while Rachel waited beneath the old maple tree.

This time, there were no empty chairs.
