What Has an Eye but Can’t See?

This classic riddle asks: what has an eye but can’t see? The clue makes you think of a living creature, but the answer is an everyday object with a part called an “eye.”

The answer is a needle. The small opening near the top of a sewing needle is called the eye. Thread passes through it before you begin sewing, but of course the needle cannot actually see anything.

The riddle works by using a familiar body-part word in a different context. Once you remember that objects can also have an eye, the answer becomes clear. It is one of those simple riddles that feels obvious after you solve it, even though the wording can send your mind in completely the wrong direction at first.
