A House Has Four Walls and Every Wall Faces South — What Color Is the Bear?

This famous logic riddle says: A house has four walls, and every wall faces south. A bear walks past the house. What color is the bear?

The answer is: white.

For every wall of the house to face south, the house must be located at the North Pole. From that point, every direction away from the house is south.

The bear therefore must be a polar bear, and polar bears appear white because of their light-colored fur.

The clue about the walls is what matters most. It tells you where the house must be located, and the location tells you what kind of bear could be walking nearby.

If you answered brown or black, the riddle successfully distracted you from the geography hidden in the first sentence.
