This classic riddle asks: What has a face on one side and a number on the other? The wording makes it sound as though the answer should be something unusual, but it is actually an everyday object.
The answer is: a coin.
Many coins have a portrait, profile, or other “face” on one side. On the opposite side, they usually display a number showing the coin’s value, such as 1, 5, 10, 25, or another denomination depending on the currency.
The trick is the double meaning of the word “face.” It can refer to a human face, but it can also refer to the front side of an object. Once you think of something with two distinct sides, the answer becomes much easier to spot.
