It was a cold, rainy Tuesday evening. I had just finished a long shift and wanted nothing more than to get home. The bus was half-empty, so I headed toward the back.
As I passed a boy who looked about 12 years old, he looked up and said softly, “Hi Sarah.”
I stopped in my tracks. My heart skipped a beat. I had never seen this boy before. How could he possibly know my name?
Nervously, I sat down next to him. “How do you know my name?” I asked.
He gave me a small, sad smile and said, “You used to sing to me when I was little.”
I felt confused. He continued, “My mom was your best friend in high school. She passed away last year. Before she died, she showed me pictures of you and played videos where you sang lullabies to me when I was a baby. She said you were like a sister to her and that if I ever saw you, I should tell you she never stopped being grateful for your friendship.”
Tears filled my eyes as memories came rushing back. Emily — my best friend from high school who moved away after we graduated. We lost touch, but I never forgot her.
The boy, named Lucas, told me his mom had been sick for a long time. He pulled out a small photo from his backpack — it was the three of us when he was just a toddler.
We talked the entire ride. I learned he was now living with his aunt and struggling to adjust.
When we reached my stop, I gave him my phone number and told him he could call me anytime.
That night I cried remembering Emily. But I also felt grateful.
Sometimes angels come in the form of a quiet boy on a bus… to remind us that love and friendship never really die. ❤️
A simple bus ride turned into one of the most meaningful moments of my life.
