This riddle asks: What gets wider the more you take from it?
The answer is: a hole.
If you keep removing soil, sand, or other material from a hole, the empty space becomes larger. The more material you take away, the wider and deeper the hole can become.
The puzzle sounds strange because taking something away usually makes an object smaller. A hole works in the opposite way because the “thing” you are describing is actually the empty space left behind.
That reversal is the trick. You are not adding anything to make the hole bigger; you are removing more from around it. The more you take, the larger the hole becomes.
