A Christmas gift left a Wisconsin woman astonished when she realized what her husband and son had been hiding. Inside the wrapping was not a newly purchased piece of jewelry, but the wedding ring she had lost nearly 48 years earlier.
Lori and Dan Vosters married in February 1977. Only seven months later, Lori noticed that her ring was gone after she had been harvesting carrots in the backyard and cleaning them. A search at the time turned up nothing.
A search that lasted decades
The family never completely forgot the missing ring. In September 2025, Dan and the couple’s son Jesse returned to the backyard with metal detectors and shovels. They spent hours looking for the small piece of jewelry buried somewhere in the ground.
Then, after a determined search, the ring appeared on the tip of a shovel. Instead of telling Lori immediately, Dan and Jesse decided to keep their discovery secret until Christmas.
The unforgettable Christmas present
They put the ring into an envelope and concealed it in an old candy box. When Lori opened the present during the family celebration, she initially thought it might contain something entirely different. Discovering her original wedding ring produced a joyful, emotional reaction.
The family shared the story publicly in January 2026 through Wisconsin television station WBAY. For Lori, the ring represented not only a marriage that had lasted for decades, but also a memory she had believed was gone forever.
Some of the most meaningful gifts are not new possessions. Sometimes, they are things lost long ago and unexpectedly returned by the people we love.
