For more than 700 days, a senior dog named Beluga waited at Austin Pets Alive! in Texas. Older dogs can face a difficult search for families, especially when they have medical needs. Then, a woman who wanted a quiet companion walked into his life and changed everything.
In March 2024, ABC News reported that 74-year-old Jeanette Finch-Walton had adopted the 10-year-old Carolina dog mix. She had asked the shelter to help her find a calm senior dog she could care for and spoil.
Two companions who needed each other
Beluga had arthritis and needed extra attention. Those challenges can make adoption more difficult, but Finch-Walton wasn’t looking for the youngest or most energetic dog. She wanted a companion whose pace fit her own.
Staff at Austin Pets Alive! arranged a meeting, and the two began a foster-to-adopt process in February. Their match soon proved to be a loving one. Beluga settled in so closely that his adopter gave him a new name: Velcro.
Why his new name fits
The name describes a dog who likes to stay near his person. For someone who had spent so long waiting in a shelter, having a devoted home offered a very different daily life.
Finch-Walton hoped the story would inspire other people to consider older dogs and animals with special needs. Senior pets can bring affection and companionship without requiring a household ready for a young puppy’s energy.
Velcro’s long wait did not define the rest of his life. At last, he had someone who wanted to spend their days by his side.
