How Many Parrots Can You See?

This parrot-counting puzzle contains more birds than it appears to at first glance.

Start with the obvious large parrots:

Top row: 4 parrots
Bottom row: 4 parrots

That gives us 8 large parrots.

Now look carefully for the smaller hidden parrots:

First parrot on the top row: 1 hidden parrot
Second parrot on the top row: 2 hidden parrots
Second parrot on the bottom row: 2 hidden parrots

Now add them together:

8 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 13

The correct answer is 13 parrots.

Many people answer eight because they count only the large birds and overlook the five smaller parrots hidden inside them.
